Aperture: Joel Meyerowitz on Provincetown
Throughout the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Joel Meyerowitz spent his summers in the beach town of Provincetown, Massachusetts, a place that has long been defined by outsiders, openness, and tolerance. The master photographer roamed the beach town with his 8-by-10 camera, photographing families, couples, children, and artists. Here, he reflects on the influence of August Sander in creating one exquisite, sharply observed portrait of art historian Linda Nochlin and her daughter Daisy. Provincetown collects one hundred of Meyerowitz's portraits, most never before published, bringing viewers into an idyllic world of self-styled individualism.
